Program

Day 1 — Arrival

Check-in from 2 PM with a welcome drink. Settle into your room, explore the permaculture garden, relax by the pool, or work from the coworking space. An optional yoga class is available in the afternoon or evening. Early sleep recommended — the hike departs after midnight.

Day 2 — Mount Batur Sunrise Hike

Pickup from the guesthouse between 00:30 and 01:00. You collect a small tree from reception to plant on the mountain. Arrive at the trailhead around 02:45 and begin the ascent shortly after. Reach the summit in time for sunrise, then explore the crater area before heading to a local kitchen for breakfast. Back at Serenity by early afternoon.

An optional visit to a lake or hot springs is possible after the hike; hot spring tickets are not included.

Day 3 — Yoga & Rest

Vegan buffet breakfast from 7 to 10 AM. Attend any yoga class on the schedule, book a massage (arrange in advance at reception), or spend the morning by the pool. Check-out at midday.

About the venue

Serenity Eco Guesthouse is a family-run, smoke- and alcohol-free property built from reusable materials. The grounds include a permaculture garden growing edible, medicinal, and fragrant plants, a 14-metre outdoor pool, an in-house spa, a coworking corner, and the Alkaline Restaurant. The property uses composting, a greywater waste system, and natural pest control. Yoga classes take place across the guesthouse's dedicated spaces, with up to nine styles offered daily. Motorbike and bicycle rentals are available on-site.

Location

Serenity Eco Guesthouse sits on Nelayan Street in Canggu, roughly 150 metres from the beach. The area has cafés, fitness studios, and a surf break suited to beginners. About the organizer

Serenity Eco Guesthouse

Serenity Eco Guesthouse was founded on 2 January 1999 by Daniel Chieppa and his Balinese wife Yatna. The property integrates permaculture, yoga, plant-based food, and eco-friendly accommodation into a single operation. Their approach draws on traditional Balinese practices of sustainable living, and the guesthouse has grown into a full-service yoga and wellness centre with daily classes, weekly workshops, and retreat packages.

The Retreat Experience

This retreat pairs a physically active day with open-ended yoga and rest. The centrepiece is a pre-dawn hike up Mount Batur, where you plant a tree on the mountain before watching the sunrise above the clouds. It is a long night and an early start — the pickup from the guesthouse happens between 00:30 and 01:00, and the trail begins around 03:00.

The rest of the retreat is yours to shape. Your two-day yoga pass gives you access to up to nine classes a day, spanning Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, Budokon, Qigong, Inside Flow, Ashtanga, sound healing, and yoga nidra. You can take one class or five; the schedule runs from morning through evening.

Between sessions, the guesthouse offers a 14-metre pool, a permaculture garden to wander, a quiet coworking corner, and an in-house spa for Balinese massage. The on-site restaurant serves a vegan buffet breakfast each morning, and Canggu's cafés and restaurants are a short walk away.

This retreat suits travellers who want structure around one adventure and freedom everywhere else. You will leave with the volcano behind you, a body that has moved in ways it does not at home, and a head that is noticeably quieter.

Benefits

  • A sunrise above the crater — the Mount Batur hike ends with dawn breaking over the volcanic landscape, a view most visitors only see in photographs.
  • Unlimited yoga across multiple styles — your two-day pass covers up to nine classes daily, so you can sample Vinyasa, Yin, Budokon, Qigong, sound healing, and more without choosing in advance.
  • Deep bodywork included — a one-hour Balinese massage at the Yogi Spa is part of the package, not an add-on.
  • A grounded daily rhythm — vegan breakfast, movement, nature, and rest in a property designed around sustainable living.
  • A practice you can continue — the variety of classes lets you find a style that fits your body and take it home.

Highlights

  • A pre-dawn hike up Mount Batur, planting a tree on the mountainside before sunrise breaks above the crater

  • A vegan buffet breakfast each morning, prepared with produce from the guesthouse's own permaculture garden
