Four days inside a traditional Balinese village, learning Watukaru Yoga — the island's own lineage, preserved at the Pasraman Seruling Dewata ashram near Mount Batukaru. Two practice sessions daily, two cultural activities daily, one massage included, and a village-run team guiding the whole stay.

This retreat runs entirely from Sesandan Megati, a working village away from Bali's main tourist corridors. Accommodation sits among rice paddies, meals are cooked with local organic produce, and the cultural program ranges from rice farming to waterfall purification ceremonies. A grounded week for practitioners and first-timers who want Bali's spiritual culture to be more than a backdrop.

The Retreat Experience

Watukaru Yoga is Bali's own tradition — said to have been shaped on the slopes of Mount Batukaru, and still taught within the Perguruan Seruling Dewata lineage. The physical practice here prepares the body for meditation: movement and breath are followed by chanting and sitting, and the teachers treat asana as the doorway rather than the destination. Two sessions a day, morning and afternoon, each moving through postures, breathwork and meditation.

The rest of the day is spent out in the village. Activities rotate daily and might include a waterfall purification visit, a morning spent rice farming with local families, a coconut oil-making workshop, a Balinese cooking class, or yoga on the beach. A traditional ceremonial dance class, a Balinese music session, and an offering-making workshop are also on the rotation — you choose what you join, and the team shapes the week from there.

Meals are taken together in the dining area, cooked with produce from the village and surrounding farms. Accommodation is spread across a few venues within walking distance of each other, so you're inside the village rather than walled off from it. A one-hour Balinese massage is included mid-stay; additional spa treatments and temple excursions can be arranged at extra cost.

You share the week with a small international group and a team who are all from Sesandan Megati itself. The pace is full but unhurried — practice, culture, food, rest — and the village itself is the setting rather than a day-trip away from it.

About the venue

The retreat is based in and around Sesandan Megati, a traditional Balinese village close to Mount Batukaru in central Bali. The Pasraman Seruling Dewata ashram — the only ashram preserving the Traditional Balinese Watukaru Yoga lineage — is here, and the yoga sessions take place in its practice space.

Accommodation is distributed across several village guesthouses rather than a single compound, with the lobby and dining area as the shared hub. The setting is working rice paddies and tropical gardens, not a resort.
