A seven-day, self-paced yoga stay at an eco-guesthouse in Canggu, 150 metres from the beach. There is no fixed group itinerary — your week is built around an unlimited yoga pass with up to nine classes a day across twenty-plus styles, from Ashtanga to aerial to yin sound healing. You sleep on-site, eat a vegan buffet breakfast at the in-house restaurant, and fill the rest of your time as you like: pool, surf, permaculture garden, coworking corner, or a Balinese massage.

Serenity is smoke- and alcohol-free, run on permaculture principles, and geared towards travellers who want a yoga base rather than a guided program.

The Retreat Experience

This is a choose-your-own-adventure week. There are no compulsory sessions, no group circles to attend, and no schedule someone else has written for you. What you get is infrastructure: a broad, daily class roster, a bed, breakfast, a pool, and the beach at the end of the street.

A typical morning might begin with a 6 a.m. Ashtanga or a slow yin session in the shala, followed by the vegan buffet at Alkaline — fruit, juices, alkaline water from the on-site kangen lab, and hot dishes prepared without sugar, dairy, or eggs. From there the day opens up. Some guests stack three classes back to back; others do one, then spend the afternoon at the 14-metre pool, on a rented bicycle, or walking the permaculture garden with a guide. Surf sessions, hiking, and Balinese massage can be arranged on-site for an additional fee.

The class menu is genuinely wide. You can work through a strict Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga sequence, hang in an aerial hammock, build a handstand against the wall, or lie under singing bowls for a yin sound healing. Chakra-themed vinyasa, tantric breathwork, core-strength flows, and restorative holds all rotate through the weekly schedule. The teaching team is large and varied — choreographers, martial artists, trauma-informed instructors — so even within one style, no two classes feel the same.

The guesthouse itself is a quiet, green pocket in Canggu. It is a smoke- and alcohol-free zone, built from reusable materials, with a grey-water system and natural pest management in the gardens. The vibe is more hostel-with-a-shala than boutique resort: communal dorms sit alongside private doubles, there is a coworking corner with strong Wi-Fi, and the crowd skews towards solo travellers, remote workers, and people using the stay as a base to explore. If you want a structured retreat with a fixed curriculum and a held container, this is not it. If you want a week of good yoga, simple food, and the freedom to build each day as it comes — this is exactly the shape.

Program

There is no day-by-day syllabus. The week runs on a daily class schedule that you dip in and out of as you wish.

Benefits

  • A week of varied practice — dip into Ashtanga one morning, aerial the next, and yin sound healing to close the week. No commitment to a single style.
  • A rhythm you set yourself — one class a day or three; the schedule bends around what you need, not the other way round.
  • Simple, clean food as a baseline — a daily vegan buffet built on alkaline water and produce from the on-site permaculture garden or sourced within 50 km.
  • A genuine eco-stay — grey-water systems, natural pest management, reusable building materials, and a garden you can walk through with a guide.
  • A working base in Canggu — reliable Wi-Fi and a dedicated coworking corner for anyone blending practice with remote work.
  • The beach in two minutes — 150 metres from the guesthouse to the sand, with surf breaks suited to beginners.

Meet your teachers

A large, rotating faculty — no two classes the same even within one style.

DI

DiazTeacher

Diaz teaches a dynamic fusion of Vinyasa Flow, Budokon, Qigong, and Inside Flow. A 500-hour trained teacher with a background as a choreographer, he sequences classes like movement pieces — playful, energetic, and deliberately outside the usual patterns.

ED

EdiYoga Teacher

Edi came to yoga in 2018 after retiring from hotel management due to physical and mental fatigue. What began as a restoration practice became a full lifestyle shift. He teaches Hatha, Vinyasa, and Yin Yang with a focus on alignment, body mechanics, and the breath-body connection.

MA

ManoharaTeacher

Manohara grew up in a small Balinese village and moved to Denpasar as a teenager. A martial arts injury led him to Ananda Marga in 1990, where a year of yoga practice resolved what two years of sport could not. He has been teaching in Bali since 2000 and trained in aerial yoga in 2014. His practice is rooted in Tantra and the lineage of Shrii Shrii Anandamurti.

TA

TamunaTeacher

Tamuna Lomidze has been teaching since 2017 across a wide range of styles: Sound Healing, Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin, breathwork, and Yoga Nidra. She describes yoga as a practice she intends to carry for the rest of her life.

TA

TaoTeacher

Tao has practised since 2007 and holds an E-RYT 500 across Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, FluidUS Style, and Myofascial Release. He has also completed training in Embodied Trauma Integration. His classes welcome all levels and are shaped by years of travel and study with diverse teachers.

MA

MaxTeacher

Max teaches dynamic, all-levels classes built on creative sequencing, subtle thematic cues, and breathwork woven through movement. His aim is a moving meditation — classes designed to leave you relaxed and wanting to come back.

EL

ElenaTeacher

Elena trained in rhythmic gymnastics for 15 years before finding yoga a decade ago. She has been teaching for six years, specialising in hip-opening flows and yin yoga — classes that work on range of motion and emotional release in equal measure.

QI

QinoTeacher

Qino began practising in 2015 after years of struggling with confidence and health. He credits classical sun salutations — simple, repeated, honest — with unlocking both his body and his self-assurance. His classes are grounded in humility and positive intention.

YO

YogiTeacher

Yogi first encountered yoga in 1992 through a monk from India, and completed his teacher training in the Philippines and India by 1995. He teaches Vinyasa, Hatha, Beginner, and Meditation — and views the practice as something that changes how you think and live, not just how you stretch.

SA

SasyaYoga Teacher

Sasya holds a degree in psychology and trained as a hypnotherapist before turning to yoga as a physical and mental practice. She teaches Yin, Restorative, and Vinyasa, framing her classes as a way to tune in and build a healthier relationship with yourself.

Food & meals

Breakfast is a daily vegan buffet at the on-site Alkaline restaurant, served from 7:00 to 10:00. The kitchen prepares everything with alkaline water produced in their on-site kangen lab, and fresh produce comes from the guesthouse's permaculture garden or is sourced within 50 km.

All meals are free from sugar, dairy, eggs, and MSG. The menu leans raw and vegan, with gluten-free options available as standard. The garden itself is planted on three principles: what can be eaten, what is medicinal, and what is beautiful and fragrant.

Lunch and dinner are not included. Canggu's Nelayan Street — where the guesthouse sits — has a dense cluster of cafés and restaurants within walking distance.

About the organizer

Serenity Eco Guesthouse

Serenity Eco Guesthouse & Yoga has been running since January 1999. It was founded by French-born Daniel Chieppa and his Balinese wife Yatna, who met on the island and built the project around permaculture, yoga, and sustainable living. The team now includes their family, long-term staff, and a rotating roster of international volunteers.

Serenity operates as both a guesthouse and a yoga centre, offering daily classes, weekly workshops, and longer stay packages. It has been recognised with a Booking.com Traveller Award in 2023 and 2024, and has been featured in The Guardian, Honeycombers, and Le Petit Fute.
