This 8-day residential retreat in West Bali combines somatic healing, Balinese yoga, energy work and daily cultural immersions. Mornings open with Balinese yoga and meditation; afternoons cycle through breathwork, ice baths, sound healing, Kundadance and a two-part self-love workshop. Each day also includes a Balinese cultural excursion — cooking classes, rice-terrace treks, waterfall visits, offering-making — plus a one-hour healing massage.

Meals are vegetarian or vegan and prepared on-site, with an optional juice detox or fasting programme available for the full stay. Nothing on the schedule is compulsory, and the pace is deliberately gentle: the retreat is built for people who want to slow down, release and reset without pressure or performance.

You'll stay in a handcrafted bamboo villa in a tropical garden beside a river, with open-air architecture, no air conditioning, and a digital-detox-friendly atmosphere.

The Retreat Experience

The rhythm of the week is steady and unhurried. Mornings start on the yoga deck with Balinese Watukaru yoga — a local tradition of breath, movement and meditation — before a shared vegetarian breakfast. Afternoons widen out: one day you might be stepping into an ice bath after a breathwork session, the next shaking through a Kundadance class, the next sitting quietly in a sound healing circle. A two-part workshop, Awaken Your Joy, guides you through inner-child connection, journaling, guided meditation and crystal healing over four hours across the week.

Somatic healing sessions offer a body-based space to release held tension and protective patterns, while Qigong or Tai Chi with a long-time martial arts practitioner keeps energy moving gently. Outside the practice spaces, Bali is woven through the days: painting and cooking classes, offering-making workshops, rice-terrace treks, waterfall swims and the occasional river clean-up with the Trash Hero team.

The retreat home is a small bamboo village beside a river, surrounded by tropical gardens. Rooms are open-air and cooled by natural ventilation rather than air conditioning, and you'll wake to birdsong and garden views. It's a place designed to be lived slowly — with no Wi-Fi pressure, no compulsory sessions, and plenty of space to nap, read or just sit.

By the end of the week, the work is less about breakthroughs and more about accumulation: daily massages, daily practice, daily time in nature. You leave having done a lot without having had to push for any of it.

Program

A sample daily rhythm follows. Exact activity times shift during the week — check the on-site whiteboard for daily details — and nothing on the schedule is compulsory.

  • Mornings: Balinese yoga and meditation (roughly 90 minutes), followed by breakfast.
  • Midday: Free time to rest, read, walk or spend time in the gardens.
  • Afternoons: A rotating programme of workshops and sessions — breathwork and ice bath, somatic healing, Kundadance, sound healing, the Awaken Your Joy self-love series.
  • Late afternoons: A daily Balinese cultural excursion, running between one and three hours.
  • Evenings: A shared dinner, with occasional evening sound healing journeys.
  • Daily: A one-hour Balinese healing massage, available at various times throughout the day.

Day-by-day shape

Day 1 — Arrival. Settle in from 14:00, receive a complimentary 60-minute healing massage, join an afternoon cultural activity, and share a welcome dinner.

Days 2–5 — Core practice. Morning yoga, afternoon workshops, cultural excursions, daily massage. Sound healing journeys may be scheduled in the evenings.

Day 6 — Deep body work. The afternoon holds a somatic healing session followed by a Kundadance movement class — two of the more embodied practices of the week.

Day 7 — Inner work. A full day built around the Awaken Your Joy workshop series: Part I opens the heart through sound healing, meditation and inner-child connection; Part II works with limiting beliefs through movement, emotional release and crystal healing integration.

Day 8 — Departure. A final morning practice, breakfast and massage before checkout at 14:00.

About the venue

Sun Sang Eco Retreats is a small bamboo village in West Bali, built entirely from 100% bamboo using biomimicry design — furniture and structures inspired by and shaped around nature. The site sits beside a river amid tropical rainforest, with seven bamboo villas and shared practice and gathering spaces.

It was founded in 2017 following the Mount Agung eruption, when the team began training local villagers in bamboo architecture. Those same craftsmen now lead Indonesia's bamboo-building field and handcraft everything on site.

This is an eco-first space: no air conditioning in the bamboo rooms, a strong digital-detox ethos, and a team who prioritise warmth and community over polished luxury. If a gecko on the ceiling bothers you, this isn't the right fit.

Location

The retreat is in Samsam, Tabanan regency, West Bali — beside a river and surrounded by lush rainforest. Kelecung Beach is 11 km away, Taman Ayun Temple 13 km, and Ngurah Rai International Airport 37 km.

This is the quieter, less tourist-developed side of the island, and the setting is integral to the retreat: tropical gardens, river sounds, and space to disconnect.

About the organizer

Master Ky

Sun Sang Eco Retreats is a sustainable hospitality project founded in 2017 in response to the Mount Agung volcanic eruption. The team trained local villagers in bamboo architecture and construction, and those same specialists now lead Indonesia's bamboo-building field.

Sun Sang describes itself as a pioneer in responsible eco-tourism in West Bali — self-supporting, community-led, and committed to protecting the surrounding river, jungle and greenery. The retreat is one part of a broader mission to empower local communities through bamboo architecture and culture.
